There is a lot of talk about AI taking jobs away and automating what us humans do. AI isn’t the first threat to taking away jobs. In the end, the machines find a useful existence and us humans learn new ways of working with new tools and find additional opportunity with these tools.
However, in this process, it’s fun to see the learning process and how awkward things are at first with new tools, toys, ideas, etc. Here is a conversation I had with ChatGPT 4o to ask it to create a cartoon caricature of me just for fun. As I had the conversation with ChatGPT it just got funnier and funnier (and frustrating).
Here is how it started.
I thought I’d give ChatGPT four different images of me so that it had more data to create this cartoon illustration.

And here is what I got. Multiple of the same face. Definitely what I didn’t intend and thus all of you are now saying – use better prompts.

I took the simple route one because this was to be simple. Two, if I have to do all this prompting to get what I want AI really isn’t saving me time is it?

As you can see, it took my request of one image to be a total of one picture but it didn’t understand that I meant ONE face. So – I tried to give a bit more help. If I had just chatted with an artist friend the first prompt would have been enough I’m thinking at this point.

So – here I go into getting help with getting a better prompt. I thought is would be great to have ChatGPT help me with that. You can see the “Focus on ONE face only” and other items. It looked great to me…

Well – at least ChatGPT can do some “Inspect and Adapt” – and when it offered to enforce the single face I was all in! Of course give it another try!

ChatGPT continues to see it’s failure and tries as it can to correct. And at this point I think it gave up and just lied to me – saying it had created the one face that I had requested.

At this point I’m giving up and want to shame ChatGPT. Telling it that a human would have been faster to get my results. To it’s credit the recommendation of Fiverr was nice to see. But am I really up for another piece of technology? No – let’s get some real help!

ChatGPT gave me some folks to talk to – and I even know of John Vogl! Good options to look at.

Thanks for the helpful advice ChatGPT! I thought I would have a quick cute cartoon illustration for me to use – but no – I now have to phone a number of illustrators and interview them with the helpful guide.
What was this about AI helping us do things faster? Or about leaving me without work to do? It seem that for a simple cartoon image I’m going to have to do a lot of work. Somehow, AI hasn’t automated my work away in getting my cartoon. Not only that, but, I am going to have to employ and pay for someone else to be the artist here – because I’m no artist.
